Comment by Don yesterday: Yes. Expressions of gratitude need not have a defined object. A person can simply be thankful, knowing that good fortune and the random influences of happenstance have, this time, favored that person. The reasons may well be unknown and unknowable–and that hardly matters.

Comment by Patricia yesterday: Personally, I have gratitude for the medical profession, & the scientific research that got me through cancer 12 years ago.

I have gratitude for the agriculturalists/farmers/ranchers who perfected their growing of our daily foods.

I have gratitude for the purification systems developed to give us clean water.

Everyone who has provided means for us to have shelter.

This year, I am grateful for firefighters, volunteers, Red Cross, & towns people who provided us safety.

Not one iota of this involves invisible beings, clergy, places of worship, or prayer!

The chapter on gratitude intrigues me. A friend tells me he has gratitude all the time. I ask him “To whom?” and “For what?” and he refuses to answer.

I have gratitude too, but I can always answer those questions.

Incidentally, several years ago when I told him I’m an atheist, he laughed and said I would come back. I told him to not wait. He’s a bit more concerned now.
