Russell’s classic essay “Why I Am Not A Christian” totally transformed my world when I read it in my middle teens. Also, his magnificent “History of Western Philosophy” influenced my decision to study philosophy. His oddest book is probably “Nightmares of Eminent Persons”. His sketch of what would constitute Hell for Josef Stalin – being imprisoned and looked after by a group of Quakers – has remained with me to this day.

w00t Bertrand Russel ftw! Just in case it’s of interest to anyone the university I go to, McMaster University has the largest Bertrand Russel collection in the world with the Bertrand Russel archives containing many of his writings and letters and even his Nobel Prize which I have held in my hands (made me giddy hehe)

As a philosopher, if I were speaking to a purely philosophic audience I should say that I ought to describe myself as an Agnostic, because I do not think that there is a conclusive argument by which one can prove that there is not a God. On the other hand, if I am to convey the right impression to the ordinary man in the street I think that I ought to say that I am an Atheist, because, when I say that I cannot prove that there is not a God, I ought to add equally that I cannot prove that there are not the Homeric gods.

Hey, guys, i was wondering if you could help me.

I am starting to write my final thesis about Bertrand Russell’s view on religion, i. e. my plan was to conclude whether he was an agnostic or atheist, or both.I wanted to argumentatively confront two views – the one that claims he was an atheist and that of the agnostic. However, i have problems with finding which authors/philosophers were decisive about Russell’s atheism. So, my questions are:

1) Which authors/philosophers claim Russell was an atheist? 2) Any good books to recommend?
