Why research chimps now need anti-depressants

A study has shown that anti-depressants can be used to help former lab chimps combat depression and trauma.

Researchers say that the treatment should be considered for hundreds of other chimps that have been used in scientific research.

Chimpanzees 'retire' in Louisiana's parkland

Endangered primates were used for scientific experiments in US laboratories.

The fate of hundreds of chimpanzees used for medical research in the US will soon be decided.

The government plans to send most of the animals to sanctuaries, but may keep around 50 in captivity to be used for experiments.

A special facility in the US southern state of Louisiana, which is funded by government and private groups, is providing a safe haven for the primates, many of which arrive with behavioural problems.

Al Jazeera's John Hendren reports from Keithville, Louisiana.
