Our bipedal ancestors could not have progressed at all if they did not have hands. Without hands they could not have invented fire half a million to one and a half million years ago. Their hands were evolved by earlier tree dwellers. The presenter uses the word 'we' in a broad sense because our species has been around for a much shorter period of time. The experts say we only came out of Africa to populate the world about sixty thousand or so years ago.
