The motivation here is clear as glass: they want to maintain the insularity and relative self-sufficiency of their community.  The second the outside world comes in to investigate child abuse (or any other crime), the nature of their community is vulnerable to similar exposure.  At some level or other, they know that their religion and particularly the peculiarities surrounding their religion are going to be exposed to public view and public criticism.

The obvious question is: how long can such such a self-involved community maintain itself in the face of ongoing crime and especially crime against children?
