Royal commission into child sexual abuse begins

The chairman of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse says more than 5,000 people are expected to share their experiences with the commission.

In his opening address to the commission's first sitting at the Victorian County Court in Melbourne this morning, Justice Peter McClellan said given the scope of the inquiry, it was unlikely the Federal Government's December 2015 deadline would be met.

"Recommend prosecution" - man, that is SO overdue that to hear that it's happening in Australia is almost shocking ... though it is also excellent to hear.

As to the issue of a "witch hunt," certainly, that's how the church would like to have this investigation be seen, never mind that ongoing buzz-word: persecution.  It is way past time that the RC church was called on this systematic behavior, and it's encouraging to see that SOMEONE (if not the US) is actually DOING something about it.
