When theists try to assert that we atheists just hate god, and really do believe, they sound to me like they're trying to convince themselves of this. It's a threat to their own belief if others can be non-believers, so they make up stories about us being haters-but-believers, because what else CAN they do? It's an act of self-defense; to do otherwise would force them to confront the weakness of their position.
