Britain's most senior Catholic cleric faces probe

Britain’s most senior Catholic cleric is the latest to find himself at the centre of an historical abuse scandal.

Three priests and one former priest have reported Cardinal Keith O’Brien to the Vatican over allegations of inappropriate behaviour dating back 30 years.

The Cardinal categorically denies the claims. He is known as an outspoken opponent of gay rights and is due to retire next month.

There was a mixed reaction from members of the congregation.

“We trust the church to make the right decisions.”, said one

Cardinal Keith O'Brien's accuser 'warned of damage to Church'

One of four men who made claims against Cardinal Keith O'Brien in the days before he resigned said he went public despite being warned he could damage the Catholic Church's reputation.

The former priest and three current priests complained to the Pope's representative to Britain, Archbishop Antonio Mennini, in early February about the Cardinal's alleged inappropriate behaviour.

Cardinal O'Brien contests the claims against him.

Catherine Deveney is the journalist who reported allegations of inappropriate behaviour against Cardinal Keith O'Brien.

Oh, so Keith O'Brien is SORRY, is he?  Funny thing - a lot of wrongdoers are sorry, too ... when they're caught.

Can we PLEASE fry this guy on both sides in a court of law, then throw him into the general population of the appropriate prison?  Maybe then, once a real example has been set, we might see more of his associates coming forward with useful information and this business can be broken open.  Yes, yes, I know about their vows of secrecy, but public exposure and the possibility of jail time might change things a mite.

Can we at least try?

Cardinal Keith O'Brien sorry for sexual misconduct

Cardinal Keith O'Brien has admitted that his sexual conduct has at times "fallen beneath the standards expected of me".

In a statement, he apologised and asked forgiveness from those he had "offended".

He also apologised to the Catholic Church, and to the people of Scotland.

The cardinal resigned last Monday after three priests and a former priest made allegations of improper behaviour against him.

Cardinal O'Brien had been Britain's most senior Roman Catholic cleric when he stood down as the Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh.

At the time, he said he would not take part in the election for a successor to Pope Benedict.

The RCC seems to be crashing with both the British and US Cardinals implicated in inappropriate or unlawful sexual conduct and complicity. Both countries should follow Australia's lead and appoint an independant national inquiry into the RCC. Evidence obtained the national inquiry can then be used to prosecute criminals and obtain compensation for victims.

So ... do we have an actually criminal investigation going on here or is this all window dressing?  Let's see some search warrants executed for papers and computers and emails and have some serious research into the above-mentioned allegations.  Then, let's see some indictments!

It is past time that the Teflon coating was scraped off the RCC and that they answered to the same law everyone else does.

British Cardinal Steps Down

Britain's most senior Roman Catholic has resigned amid claims that he behaved "inappropriately" towards four priests in the 1980s.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien strongly contests the allegations, which were made in Sunday's Observer newspaper.

The cleric was due to fly to Rome to take part in the conclave which will elect the next Pope, following the resignation of Benedict XVI
