Having met (online) two other ex-muslims with nihilistic thoughts, I've come to view this as a symptom of not having fully shed Muslim brainwashing. I see the Muslim worldview as part of a reality-limiting memeplex where everything is twisted into either rescuer, persecutor, or victim. ( Christian Fundamentalism does this too.) The religion portrays what they call apostacy (and we call freedom) from a martyr/victim perspective. When you see this darkness as a lingering side effect, it's easier to reinvent your secular happy, hopeful, loving side. You don't have to feel despair. Nihilism could be a string still connecting those old religious thoughts and feelings to your mind now, without your realizing it. You can cut that string. Religions foster this view of what happens when someone leaves, like a time bomb left in you, because it weakens those who free themselves. This strategy has helped them succeed for millenia.

I cannot imagine the difficulty dealing with the real threat that apostasy poses, though to a lesser degree ex-Christians in the USA suffer as well.
On the other hand, as an ex-Wiccan, I find my reception interesting . . . Wiccans as a rule do not burn ex-witches at the stake, while the local Christian population in my village still holds my atheism (I was never a Christian) as bizarre - You have to believe in something, they say. They would rather I were still a Wiccan than an atheist . . . the latter is too uncomfortable for them.

Hey Sayed. It is truly unfortunate that removing yourself from a belief system is cause for others to kill you. I don't have that problem -- yet. Thanks, new friend!
I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.
I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).
THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…
This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.
I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…
No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it. The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs. I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance. The letter was a mockery of atheism. Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…

I also recommend Eco-Logical and Climate Concerns, since the climate is changing so drastically.

Hello! I'm going to slowly work the crowd and see how it goes here. Skimming through, I see some promise here lacking in the forum groups I have left.
Thank you for adding me to your stable of friends.
