Wow, brain fart. Yeah, I knew it would be one of those denominations that I would feel stupid about not recognizing, after I had it spelled out for me. The acronym just wasn't clicking.
I've heard some about the level of shunning that the Seventh-Day Adventist Church does. Isn't it similar to the degree to which the Mormons go? I was going to compare it to the Scientologists, but I don't think any religion goes as far as those guys go, in terms of cutting off contact with anyone not in the cult.
Meh, that's insane when they just cut off contact like that. I've heard of plenty of fundamentalist nutjobs cutting off their kids, financially, or making their kids' lives a living hell as long as they're still financially dependent upon their parents. But the parents generally keep open a channel, preaching constantly and making the kids seriously think about cutting off contact, themselves. The idea of just breaking contact with any children who leave the church ...
I mean Christ, I know the SDA church is a bit cult-like, but damn.
Hi Mercedes, and welcome to this wonderful world of rationality, truth and peace.
True common sense helped by science leads to freethinking wisdom as you have found out.

"Melinda that's so nice of your mom to support your daughter in her decision to focus on her classes. Did she already start summer school?
Joan we are here to support you and you are in our thoughts.
Happy hump day to you too Melinda!"
So tired of religious apologists asking me to show evidence for the non-existence of their particular god. I've asked them how they would go about showing evidence for the non-existence of the dragon in Carl Sagan's garage or Russell's celestial teapot. They assert that the analogy is false, but don't explain how. They use words like 'logic' or 'inference' as if they were magic charms without fully understanding what these words mean. It's not unlike superstitious primitives from a cargo cult…See More
