Wow, brain fart. Yeah, I knew it would be one of those denominations that I would feel stupid about not recognizing, after I had it spelled out for me. The acronym just wasn't clicking.
I've heard some about the level of shunning that the Seventh-Day Adventist Church does. Isn't it similar to the degree to which the Mormons go? I was going to compare it to the Scientologists, but I don't think any religion goes as far as those guys go, in terms of cutting off contact with anyone not in the cult.
Meh, that's insane when they just cut off contact like that. I've heard of plenty of fundamentalist nutjobs cutting off their kids, financially, or making their kids' lives a living hell as long as they're still financially dependent upon their parents. But the parents generally keep open a channel, preaching constantly and making the kids seriously think about cutting off contact, themselves. The idea of just breaking contact with any children who leave the church ...
I mean Christ, I know the SDA church is a bit cult-like, but damn.

We invite you to make good friends by joining the busy group "ORIGINS: Universe, Astronomy, Life, Earth, Humans, Religion, Gods, Atheism, Evolution, Darwin..." with 600 discussion topics and 3200 members.

When you say excommunicate, to what degree do you mean? Are you basically completely estranged from your family and your previous social group? At least you've got a local atheism group to get involved with. Are you close enough to the urban area of Omaha to be active there?
There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film. The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons. He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.
There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"! .
No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes. 'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands. Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…
i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day. however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more. in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…
I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.
I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).
THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
