Oh, the reason I mentioned the Eugenics book is that despite many believers (Cough, ben stein) saying that eugenics is based on evolution and Science. This period text has very little science in it. In fact it justifies many of it's statements with bible verses and even has a section of homeopathic remedies in the back. The science it does have is either readily known things like basic grade school biology or pseudo scientific claims with no justification other than the were correct on the biology so they must be correct in that statement. I just flipped the text open to "The Bible (or bibble like I like to call it) on Sex Hygene". They actually have in quotes the "great white plague" and say that "syphilis claims more victims than war or the "great white plague"". Is it just me or do you also get a picture of a 80's band traveling the country burning down bars as they go?
Matt! I'm another one of those Fundamentalist Christian turned UU turned agnostic turned (finally!)atheist...you've heard this story a million times. When I first discovered the Atheist Experience, I had it playing non-stop for about a week. Also, I'm thrilled to finally find another person out there who knows as much about Fred Phelps as I do if not more...I completely agree with your analysis of him and would pay the $213.17 left in my bank account to hear you interview him and show him what a real fag-enabler looks like! Take care.
According to MARY RIES MELENDY, THE SCIENCE OF EUGENICS AND SEX LIFE 1914, "Sickness, worry, excessive study, EXERCISE OF THE PASSIONS, or anything else which exhausts the nervious energy will produce baldness." A friend of mine gave me a copy. It's a hoot and a half. http://www.antiqbook.com/boox/grn/030741.shtml
I love both your shows, and partly because of you I have started the process of creating an atheist RSO(Registered Student Organization) on my campus. You and other activists like you are a great inspiration to the rest of us.
You've given me more good reasons to be an atheist than any other person. Your intellectual honesty and your ability to fight through crowds of raging theists and Creationists is what has made you a role model for me. Thank you for what you have given me.
It's always a good idea to look at the trees ... particularly if your car is careening in their general direction. But beyond avoiding metal-bending impact, a look at the trees simply gives an empty mind something to ruminate on. Trees' existence has no bearing on the existence or non-existence of a deity. They might as well say to you, "Look at the fleas."
Love The Atheist Experience and The Non-Prophets, both of which I listen to as podcasts. Thank you for all that you do. Listening has been incredibly helpful to me in thinking about the issues of atheism, theism, and religion.
