Cool, you should be able to catch all of the Broadway plays, once they start touring.  As the third-largest city in the country, Chicago is an obvious stop for all of them.  You just have to be able to make the two hour trip.

I saw The Lion King, when the touring show passed through Raleigh.  I have ... mixed feelings about the play version.  On the plus side, the costuming is awesome.  That's what I always hear people raving about in the reviews.

The play itself was kind of weak, though.  They felt the need to stretch it from an hour and a half movie into a 2 1/2 hour play.  Everything that was added was filler.  The new songs weren't even vaguely as good as the ones from the movie, and the extra non-song material was similarly all fluff which did nothing to advance the plot or add depth to the characters.

If you go in with reasonable expectations, you'll probably enjoy it a bit more.  Don't expect the 4 or 5 new songs to be very good, and you'll be able to focus more on the costuming, which is well worth the trip.

Sadly, that's just one of the things that often happens, when you rewrite a production for a new medium.  The same thing happened with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.  The books are some of the best sci-fi and humor writing out there.  The movie just completely fell flat.

What other sort of material do you read, of the more modern genres?  Admittedly, I lean a little heavily into science-fiction and fantasy, but I also read plenty of legal dramas, suspense/horror novels, and just random fiction books that are hard to classify.  Most of my older reading is stuff from the 20th century, like Orwell and similar classics (I'm a bit of a politics junkie), but I occasionally go a bit older than that.

Where do you go to catch your dose of theater? It looks like you're placed evenly between Chicago and Detroit, making it an annoyingly long drive to get to either.  Must be rough.
