one of my first experiences with the larger nexus was in 1995. I'd gotten the latest version of Anarchy, a great FTP client, had installed it, and was working through the docs. I ran one of the Applescript examples, which didn't work, so I emailer peter Lewis, the software's author, telling him what I'd done and asking for advice. This was at about 9:00pm in Cincinnati, OH. I then started to work on something else, figuring I'd hear from Peter, if at all, in a couple of days. 10 minutes later, Eudora beeped, I opened my mail, and there was a message from Peter Lewis. He'd been unablevyo find the error in his code, so he'd passes my inquiry on to his friend Quinn, the Applescript expert; Quinn had found the problem, and Peter was sending me the corrected example code.
I was in Cincinnati, Peter was in Melbourne, and Quinn was in Perth. My sense of awe and wonderful potential of this marvelous technology that men hath wrought has stayed with me.
G'day, mate, and thanks for adding me as a friend.
G'day Doc! It's always a good day when you make a new friend - especially one that isn't a superstitious, mind numbing, looney!
I hope someday to make it to Australia - where (so I hear) the people are warm and the beer is cold. And, if I do have that opportunity, I'll let you know in advance so that you can either leave town or tell me how to come and pay you a proper visit!
Thanks for the invite. I have been going through the archives for the Skeptic's Tank podcast recently, and I am very happy to hear about the goings on down under. I fully intend to make a visit to Australia in the next year, and meeting like-minded poeple there is a top priority, after I take care of business.
Well, fortunately, I'm in the outskirts of Acworth and not in the 'downtown' area. Geographically speaking, i'm about 25 miles due north of downtown Atlanta, Georgia (USA). Downtown Acworth is really quite a dismal backwater.
Unfortunately, most of the 'deep South' where I reside is anything but ungodly. Well, in a way, all the 'godliness' is very ungodly - but that's another story altogether....
In fact, I consider myself the 'Village Atheist' - in contrast to the 'Villiage Idiots' - which in this case is actually most everyone else.
I know. It seems a bit extreme. But I'm not joking. For example, my wife is a 5th Grade teacher (kids are about 11 - 12 years old). The school year started today in fact and she has a new crop of minds to try and teach critical thinking skills. One of her students transferred over from a religious school. The child's most noteworthy skill: Memorizing Bible Verses. Her previous religious school teacher noted that this skill will carry her far. Isn't that special?
But we soldier along. Doing our level best to help ensure that the future of this once great nation of ours is not left to the willfully ignorant and feeble minded fundies that seem to be so plentiful in this modern age.
I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.
I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).
THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…
This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.
I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…
No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it. The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs. I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance. The letter was a mockery of atheism. Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…
