Nigeria has the potential to be a great, black nation, but unfortunately religion appears to be the main stumbling block. The just concluded election in the country has shown that Nigeria still has that hurdle to surmount. About two weeks ago, several southerners who are mainly christians were mudered or maimed. Several churches were burnt and homes belonging to southern christians were torched. The reason were that a christian southerner Dr. Goodliuck Jonathan won a presidential election. He beat his rival General Muhammadu Buhari a muslim northerner at a free and fair presidential election on 16th of April, 2011.
The root cause of these recuurent mayhems is traceable to our historical background as well as our colonial past. Islam and islamic scholarship came to Northern Nigeria by the arabs thrrough the saharan trade route. Christianity and western education came to the south through the atlantic ocean. This dichotomy has remained with us till today. Several people have been killed each time there is clash between the adherents of these two opposing religions. To make matters worse, the recent activities of both christian and islamic fundamentalists has further hightened the tension between the two camps. Both religious leaders are in hot contest to win more followers to their camps. Besides, Nigerian adminstrators at both state and federal levels are paying lip service to the secular status of the country as spelt clearly in the Nigerian costitution. They have been using the country's resources unfortunately to promote the two religions. This is the dilema and the source of crisis in the country that seem to treaten the continued peaceful existence of this country as a united, stable sovereign state. That iis our dilema.

The discussion group is one of the most interesting to me, but is not as active as it used to be.  I wish I could get more people involved.  Things tend to cycle, so maybe there will be more again.
