Thanks for the invite to DFWCOR. The Frisco Atheists have not actually organized as an official group yet so I'm not sure if we should be on your "hot prospects" list. "friend" me and we'll keep the conversation going. I'm definitely on board with the goals of the group.

Terry, I just read an article on the National Journal titled "The Godless Rise As A Political Force". My reason for contacting you is that for the few past months that I've been a student at the University of Houston, each day I get more and more interested in starting an atheist group. To my surprise, of all the spiritual, religious and ethnic groups already in place at the campus, there was no group of any kind geared towards the 'freethinkers' that I know attend UH in masses. I was wondering if you had any advice for me as far as group support would go: current Houston-based groups, national campus atheist organizations, etc. I'd appreciate any guidance you could provide for me in my ambitious journey to start the new era of enlightenment, and it begins with our youth.

You mentioned the North Texas Church of Freethought. I belong to the Houston Church of Freethought. The church in Dallas was first, then Houston added another.
I live close to the Woodlands, and the Humanist have a great group there - Issac Asimov Humanist group. They are an awesome group.

Are you affiliated with the members of the Austin Atheist group? They are also a great group that seems to have a lot of social interactions.

Oh, I see, we aren't that close but I always seem to have to transfer planes in FW. Cheap tickets I suppose - LOL I'm flying again on 8/30 and I have a lay over there on my way to CA and on to Hawaii.
Oh, you are right about the lack of atheist in Humble and Kingwood, where I actually live. There is a church on every corner and I believe businessmen absolutely have to attend to make a "good impression". Thirty miles south in Houston, there is a hot bed of non-believers. There is even a "church" - curious I realize, but none the less, it gives everyone an opportunity to meet inder one roof once a month. It's called Houston Church of Freethought. There is a larger "parent" church in Dallas. There is a strong Humanist community also, and most are atheist.
My daughter and granddaughter are atheist. My granddaughter just graduated high school and absolutely no one knew she was an atheist. She got accepted into Rice University and plans on being an active member of the Atheist group there. Everyone from other students to teachers would probably have ostracized and some children are not strong enough to endure this.
So, this matter would have fit in with your goals - BUT how do you plan on acheiving your goal?
BTW, my two sons are athiest as well as my sister - and I never talked with any of my children, only pointed out to use rational thinking when it came to accepting "the book" as fact. As adults they told me that they didn't want to discuss it with me at the time but none of them believed, even at a very young age!
And I must ask- Why so many people use The Thinker as their avitar?
