Sexual violence against Native American and Alaska Native women is at epidemic proportions. Native American and Alaska Native women are more than two and a half times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted than women in the United States in general. More than one in three Native American and Alaska Native women will be raped in their lifetime and, according to Department of Justice statistics, 86 per cent of perpetrators of sexual assault and rape against Native women are non-Native men. Because of a confusing maze of federal, state and tribal jurisdictions, perpetrators of these crimes are frequently not brought to justice.
The Tribal Law and Order Act is a historic effort to tackle major jurisdictional challenges that allow crimes against Native American and Alaska Native peoples to go unpunished and unabated. The Senate recently and unanimously passed the legislation by including the bill as an amendment to H.R. 725, the Indian Arts and Crafts Amendment Act of 2010. Now we need to ensure that the House does the same!
Birds aren't the only large flying animals you're likely to encounter in Belize - there are 70 different species of bat in this tiny country!
These are proboscis bats (Rhynchonycteris naso), also called long-nosed bats or sharp-nosed bats, lined up along the trunk of a tree next to Monkey River. Lines of up to 45 individuals have been seen on a single tree! The stripes on their backs are shared by other species like greater white-lined bats, but proboscis bats have distinctive white markings along their forearms, as well as a short, pointed tail. The way they perch together over water is also very characteristic of this species. Like other insectivorous bats, they use echo-location to hunt bugs, flying low over the water source they live next to.
They're tiny creatures, only a couple of inches long and weighing less than an ounce!
Thailand is something of a bat paradise, with lots of limestone caves and plenty of insects.
This one was in Tham Daowadung (Cave of Heaven), close to Sai Yok national park.
The conditions in this cave aren't very heavenly, and this must certainly be a very patient bat, because there are lots of human visitors intruding on its sleep all day long, and the hurricane lamps used to light the cave make it very hot and sticky inside.
Ning eliminated that wonderful "gothic" background option. The ones they have right now are not that great, imo. The dark ones just don't work out right. They are just not legible. I miss it. I loved that gothic background.
With time running out for North America's bats, conservation groups, caving organizations, organic farmers, anti-toxics groups, and others have joined with some of the nation's leading bat scientists to call for substantially increased funding to respond to white-nose syndrome -- the disease that has been wiping out bats in the eastern United States over the last four years. Written testimony submitted to Congress on May 14 outlined the urgent need for more resources to be funneled toward this crisis.
But Congressional members need to hear from individuals who care about bats, too. They need to know that people from around the country, and in particular, their own constituents, are deeply concerned about disappearing bat populations and the implications for ecosystems.
Bats are our allies in controlling insect crop pests, and they otherwise help to maintain a healthy balance of insect populations within natural communities. While bats are the only true flying mammals, and represent one of the most diverse group of mammals on the planet, they have been studied relatively little and are underappreciated by most people. Nonetheless, the loss of bats could have severe repercussions for other wildlife, ecosystems, and humans. Bat supporters must speak up now, while there’s still a chance for our actions to make a difference to their survival.
Thank you for accepting. That's our 12 y/o son's blue eyed husky we rescued three years ago from a husky rescue agency, "Angels of the Snow". I mention her in My Profile. My wife and I have rescued 5 various dogs over the last 22 years. Now my 9 year old daughter is pushing for another dog...
Sacha, Richard helped me realized I was turning into a giant douche bag in the blog and I publicly apologized there but I wanted to apologize here on your wall. I am sorry. What I wrote was uncalled for. Dave Rogers.
