Yeah, I know what you mean. If you're not in a city of at least a couple hundred thousand, it's hard to get a local group together with enough regular people to have a decent social group. Once you get a bunch of atheists in one place, you have to find enough people in that group who enjoy doing the same sort of things as you.
Have you checked meetup.com for any local activity in your area? The groups in lots of smaller cities make use of that.
