I work for two small towns in Eastern NC and I have heard several of the elected officials and planning board members say that they believe that Obama is a muslim(as if there were something wrong with that). They totally bought into the all of the rumors. I have heard several people say that they would never vote for a black man. I don't know why I am still a little surprised at the open bigotry that so many people display.

Thank you for the welcome. I am honestly here to meet like-minded people and learn more about myself.

Peace for now

Thanks for the welcome. I am an atheist in Texas and a school librarian which makes for an interesting mix, huh? LOL!!! I'm here to write about my experiences as a teacher/librarian/atheist in Jesusland....with pics to prove it... ;-)

Yikes! That was too bad for the guy you asked, he must have missed a lot. :-)

I'm glad to receive such warm welcome from Dallas.

yeah, i don't think i will ever buy into that mentality, either or i would have a long time ago. I'm just hoping with the recent declaration that we have been in a recession, things don't get too hectic.

Speaking of demoralization through consumer culture, I know one guy who thinks there is an active effort to 'demoralize' parts of the population, and make them more 'efficient' workers. This guy believes all the NWO stuff hardcore. While I don't wanna buy just any old conspiracy theory crap, I do wonder how much truth there actually is to the NWO stuff.

Yeah. I'm not saying I don't have any of that same mindset, but I don't think I'm half as bad as many people. I usually let other people pass first if they look like they're in a frantic life or death hurry, for example. I'm not the type to cut someone off for nothing. Though I do get irritated when other people do, and tend to want to wave them by like "Go the fuck on already! Wouldn't wanna make you late for a meal, fatty!"

I try not to get too worked up and keep those words to myself, though. lol.

Anyway, yeah I've been meaning to check some of those out. Fast Food Nation sounds familiar. Sorry for the delayed reply, but I'm in a sort of perpetually apathetic-depressed-wake-up-just-to-exist-daily-with-no-real-passion-or-motivation-to-live mood lately. lol. Trying to figure out the career/life path thing, now. Stress.

Thanks for the comment!

I do not see the necessity in religion's being an "evil force." I think it depends on what 'religion' comes to for each individual. Clearly much of what we call religion is evil, but a lot of it is neutral and some of it is even good, I'm inclined to think.

War on Christmas in May

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/21/texas-merry-christmas-bill_n_3312786.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day.  however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more.  in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 12 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…
