Sociolinguistics is this field of Linguistics that studies the influence(s) of society on languages and the way people use them. For instance, I specialise in the study of non-standard accents of English, and the way foreign people (French people especially, obviously ^^) perceive them, e.g. how a French person with a high-school level in the English language would perceive a cockney accent, relative to the (standard) accent he has been taught in school; that's the kind of studies I have done ^^
