No, not a uniform, Heretic. Just the way they used to dress in those days. I think it was when Alan Turing was working for the Intelligence service in Britain during the war. He was deciphering the German ENIGMA code etc. It has often been said that, as well as being the father of the modern computer, no single person did more during the war to defeat the Germans. After the war, the establishment hounded him because he was gay - he was forced to choose between going to prison for having it off with another guy (in private) or take hormones that would make him grow tits. He chose suicide instead.
He really is a hero of mine. A brilliant mathematician and scientist and a philosopher of great insight. But in teh end the wowsers and teh religous did him in.

(btw did u used to be a sea turtle...?)
Yup. But I had to drop it. Everytime I tried to yell "BLüCHER!", all I could say was "glub, glub, glub". And of course seahorses don't neigh - that only spoils most of the fun.

That's not an easy question Jillian. I think part of it is that people out here have a very insular existence, especially in the rural areas. Most of the conservative older people (and consequently a lot of their kids) have never really travelled anywhere to see anything from other cultural perspectives. They grow up believing everything they're told by their parents and their narrow-minded little communities. So that leads to the entrenchment of right wing politics and Christianity in lock step. Frank's book "What's the matter with Kansas?" has some good analysis of what elements have been channeling public opinion and belief in the state.

thanks for the "happy birthday". Palmyra is near Rochester, NY, and is the birthplace of the Mormons... aka the most gullable people on earth.
