Well my father is Egyptian and mother is American. They couldn't decide what to name me, a Muslim name or a Christian name. So they picked Joseph as it's also an acceptable Arabic name, but the preferred version of Joseph among most Arabs is Yusuf. So I actually have two passports (American and Egyptian) one says Joseph Said and the other says Yusuf Said. I know..that looks shady as hell. Everyone at the university and everyone else in America just calls me Joe, but my new girlfriend encouraged me to change it to Yusuf because that's what she calls me.
I know how you feel about keeping your atheism neutral to the public. I work in the university's evolutionary biology department, and there are theist there! So I keep my atheism to myself at work too. It's a weird contradiction in my opinion that they understand how evolution works and see evidence of it at work everyday, but still maintain there is some sort of god in the universe...I don't get it.
Hi there atheist Andrea, nice to meet you. ^_^ It has been rough, as you might imagine. Sometimes I almost wish I could believe and wrap myself up with that cocoon of unreality, but that's not how I roll.
Perhaps we'll bump into each other sometime. I've started attending GS Skeptics again now that I'm feeling a bit better.
I'd really like to see some sort of informal Atheist get-together in the area just so we can decompress from the constant barrage of nonsense we have to try to block out every day with those with like minds. I think someone else posted something about wanting to do this, and it seems like a really good idea to me.
Perhaps once I get my house in order (I'm feeling better, but my wife is having a knee replacement in the upcoming weeks) we could have it here. Just a thought.
lol , shame be upon you, lol, i am active and pissing off people ( pardon the language), nothing is being achieved, religious choose to remain religious, blinded. irrational, unscientific and bigots, LOL
by "active" i meant simply, are you spreading the awareness to others to be rational and give science its due credit, I agree this almost an impossible task. I was listening to Sam Harris the other day and he was giving some stats on Americans being among the worst in terms of religious fanaticism, bigotry and their religious god delusion. There is a DVD set of Beyond Belief ( 18+ hours) consisting of presentations by mostly by the intellectual science community Your music in the back ground sounds like almost theistic. But I am mostly wrong.
Hope your weekend is going fab. What are your groups I can sign up, lost track. Are there any sites you are aware to debate the existence of god delusion, help, advise. Are you active or are you live and let live.
Thanks for your prompt response, appreciate it. I am no computer geek, and as we have i tunes,my youngest can will fix it for me. Are you in Facebook too, in another or real name, or this your only plat form to spread the "word". Hope you heard of Dubai, its an amazing place to be in, very vibrant. well, hasta la vista.
