Why the hell am I up so late? [and also - nationalism]

I heard a story, as the only way I can get my reading-for-fun fix these days is via audio format, and it was about a soldier who was just-ever-so-upset for having shot another American during a riot.

"Why, man, why? We're not supposed to shoot other Americans?" the forgettable soldier whines.

Who, exactly, are you supposed to shoot and not feel terrible? Space creatures? Rabid camels? Because, let's be honest here, an American person is just as much a person as an Indian person or a Korean person. Being human works that way. It's true.

And I've discovered that I hate America. In fact, I actually hate all countries. It's one thing to subscribe to a set of shared values and beliefs, but to simply lump people together and attribute gross virtues and weaknesses simply as a function of their fucking geography? To promote the Homo sapiens that reside in one's own country to some other extra level of value above the Homo sapiens living on the other side of some imaginary line drawn on an inaccurate map by some medieval conqueror is a wee bit preposterous these days, don't you think?

John Lennon said it best:

"Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace"

I feel that ever since WWII Americans have been especially prideful. They get a feeling of superiority from their national identity.
