What I Feel About Religion

As a child, both my religion and my family supplied comfort and safety. Only later did I find out that in place of that comfort and safety was freedom. Everything was predetermined: what I hated, what school I went to, what friends I had. Finally escaping from home, I've learned that people are what makes up this world and that religion fosters prejudice and preconceived notions that left me feeling very lonely as I tried to assimilate into a multicultural society. I'm a firm believer that God did not create religion. God did not create prejudice, sects, and stifling rules that limit one's growth. This country has a double standard. We were supposed to be an enlightened nation, not a Christian nation. Pedofiles go to prison, they don't get switched to another parish. If you have different opinions that your existing religion, just like the Mormons, set up your next religion. I now believe Christian and all the Abrahamic religions were put in place to divide and control people, and not allow us to explore freedom. Any by the way, the Abrahamic religions believe that God created Adam, and Eve was created by the use of Adam’s rib, and that God gave them 2 children, Adam and Eve. If that’s true, where did all the other children come from? There is only one choice in that formula, and its one I choose not to think about.

That's a good question to ask, if honestly is deception, then you're staying true to the spirit of false leadership. The question then becomes, are you truly one of those leaders wearing the atheist costume for Halloween?

Comment by United Under One on October 3, 2011 at 9:02am: Cane- Challenging is a wonderful way to bring our spirit and passion. Accusing is a way of creating labels and does not promote discourse. Accepting, it does not mean agreeing. Freedom of thought takes us into many places and helps us achieve a conclusion. Being an atheist I do not have the complications brought to others by religion or by believing in one almighty, or many. That doesn't mean the human thought process doesn't bring you over certain roads that sometimes may intersect with different views that later on will be rejected. Uniting our thought pattern in a positive direction can build valuable information to assist us in freeing ourselves with certain parts of the government that tend to look on us as aliens. Your thoughts would be welcome. Your anger be useless.

Comment by United Under One on September 28, 2011 at 11:03am: Cane- I can't agree with your comments more in regards to how religions began, why they continued to form, or what they do to people. Religion and believing in a supernatural is HORRENDOUS to a person's well being. What I stand for now, is accepting EVERYONE, whether they believe in God (or not)... and educating them on the horrible dogmas religion puts on them. Opening their eyes to what "being free" means in the hopes that one day they will jump to my side of the argument - realizing that God and religion don't pay their bills. Like you said, being able to question everything is key to life, because that the only way to find the real truth for yourself. Because as I've stated before, I think that you are the only person who knows what the right path for you in life is. No religion, the parent, no pastor, no God can lead you to it. People need to start taking responsibility of themselves, questioning everything, and defining what's right for them.

It teaches them to accept what their pastors tell them rather than to question everything. To question everything is the key and religion does not provide any evidence that it's information is true. According to Carl Sagan, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". United Under One believes in a supernatural being. I ask her to offer evidence of this being. My guess is UUO will not provide anything that would be considered extraordinary evidence. So, I say UUO is wrong in persisting and spreading this idea.

Science is only as good as the questions we put to it and it would be a waste of time to entertain every idea as valid until proven otherwise. We very carefully pick and choose what questions we want science to answer. Science would not try to see if there is a tooth fairy giving children coins while they sleep in exchange for their loose tooth. With that said, science can only technically say with a less than 100% certainty that according to the understanding we have gained so far of the world around us that we can say there is no tooth fairy. That's just the way science works. If you ask me if I know there is no God, I would say I lean toward that understanding. If you ask me if I believe there is no God, right now I have to say there is no God.

Comment by Carl Pastor on September 28, 2011 at 1:05am: heh heh cane, im not a scientist, and im aware of Karl Potters ideas, but i still say there is no god. if you admit 0.00001% then youll have to entertain every wacko idea anyone can think of. the universe is really a pink baboon. no, everything,not just the universe, but everything, is in this large ash in my ashtray. i dont really want to have to debunkevery idea out there
