Human memory is a fragile thing, subject to all sorts of biases that can
make it impossible to distinguish between real and false memories. When
I think back to the quality of the programming aired on the History
Channel several years ago, it seems like it was far superior to what
they are airing now. I'm not sure if this is an accurate memory or just
me viewing the past through rose-colored glasses. But have you seen some
of the crap they now show?

On another note, I have surprisingly enjoyed William Shatner's Aftermath. I thought it was not going to be so great, but after watching a few, I got some insights into these dubious figures he features on his show, Now, not all of the people he interviews are weirdos or killers, but those are the ones I have seen. I just watched the Bernard Goetz program and really enjoyed it. After watching it, I don't care for Goetz much, but I do feel like I have a better understanding of what happened and why. i wouldn't call it hard investigative reporting, but it is every bit as good as anything I've watched on Biography.

As a historian, I can tell you that most professional historians always found them somewhat lacking, however, it sounds as if they have moved totally out of the history zone into the sensational. I have had several pleasant experiences with PBS' American Experience. I highly recommend watching it instead. I used to like Ken Burns' but after viewing his special on the Shakers, I have been less impressed. I felt he was sentimental about these religious freaks that even the religious considered freaky.

I really enjoyed the AE programs on Hoover Dam, Riding the Rails and the Civilian Conservation Corps. I didn't like the documentary on Jimmy Carter so much. I felt like important things like the Iran hostage crisis and the Camp David Accords were glossed over while they waxed on about his political campaign for president.

"Nostradomus Effect", Ancient Aliens, Seven Deadly Sins, Battles of the Bible, Search for UFO's....sheesh! Did we run out of history? Are actual historical figures so boring they aren't worth a one hour show? At least Pawn Stars is amusing
