Us against Them

I guess I better define who is Us and who is Them.

1) Us=Atheists and Them=Christians

2) Us=Americans and Them=Non-Americans

3) Us=Americans and Them=Middle-Easterners

4) Us=Americans and Them=Chinese Communists

5) Us=Blacks and Them=Whites

6) Us=LGTB folks and Them=Religious folks

7) Us=Democrats and Them=Republicans

8) Us=Northern States and Them=Southern States

I could go on and on and on, but I think you get the idea

In Science there is no Us vs. Them!!!!!! There is not Spanish Biology and Canadian Physics. The only science called Biology there is is what all humans have worked together to understand what those same people categorized as information about Biology.

Comment by matthew greenberg on February 28, 2012 at 8:50am: Freud's "the narcissism of small differences" applies quite well here. it is b/c we are so alike in many ways that we dislike someone else's opposite opinion. it makes us feel like we may be wrong.

also, let's not forget that science, while impartial, is evil and not to be trusted. the devil works in such ways :)

Comment by Loren Miller on February 28, 2012 at 7:07am: Problem is, Cane, biology and physics and chemistry and any well-disciplined science lack one very important component to the "us vs. them" equation: EGO ... especially a wounded, damaged or otherwise altered ego which requires that it be BIGGER than someone else, that it have a higher position by stepping on someone lower.

Excessive ego feeds the baser side of politics and religion both and does neither any favors. An inflated ego shouts at the top of its lungs, I HAVE THE ANSWER!!! where a more balanced and self-possessed ego says, "I think this will work - let's give it a try." The ego out of balance wants to control the world. One in balance is far more interested in controlling and knowing itself.

That's how I see it, anyway....
