This week in; Autocrats and Corruption - Putin PUNditry

Autocratic authoritarianism;  knows no right-wing or left-wing, it's corruption dressed up as populist democracy...

According to Russia's Central Election Commission "Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin received 63.64 percent of the vote with almost 100% of the votes counted." According to independent observers, that number is actually as low as 29%...

…Putin on the ritz.

Related "topless Putin" news:

"He (Putin) voted with his wife Lyudmila at a polling station in the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

Minutes afterwards, a group of topless Ukrainian protesters (Link - NSFW if boobs offend) tried to steal the ballot box with his vote in it.

The three women revealed slogans painted on their chests and backs including "I steal for Putin" and "Kremlin rats", and shouted "Putin is a thief!"

They tried to take the box before being detained by police, said the Femen group, which is known for its topless protests against trafficking of women and prostitution in several countries.

Moscow police described the demonstration as a "provocation", saying the women were taken to a police station where officers were deciding whether they should face charges."

Well, I s'pose if you're not a Chechen, Georgian, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Uyghur...

The Ritz cracker looks like Putin is riding a table-saw, with his package being the first thing to get split asunder.

Russia has had an almost unbroken string of 1000 years of autocratic rule. Sure, there are many other nations and peoples whose governments have been worse and who have even less notion of democracy, and yet democracy is sprouting the proverbial shoots worldwide. But Russia is in some sense exceptional. No other nation, with the possible exception of China, combines the level of cultural sophistication, intellectual achievement, and utterly moribund, fatalistic anomie in the political sphere.

So it is not surprising that Putin was reelected in a landslide of corruption.  What is perhaps surprising is that he's quite restrained and pluralistic as far as despots go.  Ordinary people are rarely sent to labor camps anymore - breaking centuries of tradition.
