The Rise of Islamic creationism...don't Christians see the paradox here?

Religion has its costs. As Drake Bennett points out in his article: “The Rise of Islamic creationism,” (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/opinion/points/stori...) science continues to be challenged by those whose only arguments are based on a priori assumptions. I’m wondering if fundamentalist Christians here in the US worry about aligning their thoughts and efforts to thwart discovery and science with those who are submissive to Islam – after all, the Koran has no Genesis to defend.

The Theory of Evolution is not a debate in most highly educated, industrialized countries besides the US – absolutism has given way to intellectual curiosity in places like Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Japan and Iceland where the Quality of Life Index is much higher. American Creationists are forced to join with third world Islamic countries to find an ally in this campaign to undermine science. They are support by precedents like the execution of Bruno and the imprisonment of Galileo by the Church for supporting the Copernican “Theory” that the Earth in fact orbits around the Sun (Heliocentric “Theory”) when they justify the crusade to arrest scientific inquiry for the sake of protecting ancient legends about our origin, handed down by herding communities.

Here is what we can absolutely say about “Origin” itself – squat. Macroevolution is still a strong hypothesis. We are here and I think its safe to assume it happened in some fashion – but the six-day project that is described in two separate Genesis stories? Microevolution is no longer a controversy by anyone who has studied the massive evidence scientists have observed as to the mechanism of evolution, “Natural Selection.” Just look at the current generation and compare their size and abilities to our grandparents. Mitochondrial DNA continues to guide us in the discovery of vestigial progenitors and may be a key into our understanding more about origin – but isn’t the larger question “What shall we do as we are already here?”

Religion might make you feel better about life, give you meaning, and compel you towards a better morality – but it has costs. In 2008, that cost was $207 Billion in tax-free contributions. When that money supports those who defend ancient superstition at the price of scientific discovery, I the taxpayer rebel. I’m not telling you what to believe, in fact I defend your right to do so – but don’t force those unfounded beliefs on my children because it makes you feel better. The US, which is looking to create new industries, would be a leader in the “Stem Cell” development business but for religious activists taking my tax dollars to defend their superstitious bias against it.
