"Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived". (Isaac Asimov).
Do Christians really assimilate what the Bible, and particularly the Old Testament, is telling in it's accounts of the unprovoked attacks of the Jews against the indigenous inhabitants of Canaan ? Unprovoked, and only in the name of a (tribal war) God the Jews committed genocides against the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites (Deuteronomy 20:17). Do any believers ever wonder why the God they believe in would command, and sometimes participate in, such violence against other human beings ?
What do Christians make, for example, out of what is said in Hosea 13:16
"Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up."
How can Christians condone this kind of thing ? Do they understand in plain English what is being said ? It's saying very young toddlers (infants) were going to be beaten repeatedly against the ground, or thrown off cliffs, etc., ("dashed in pieces"). It's saying that pregnant women will be slashed open and the unborn babies ripped out of their bellies. Why so violent ? Why so inhumanly cruel ? Why is the Judeo/Christian God such an angry fellow ?
In the garden of Eden God offered to Adam and Eve the choice between abject submission and strict obedience, or having the power of knowledge and reason. They either had to choose obedience and submission or the power to know. Fortunately, though only a myth, Eve had the sense to choose to know. What is God afraid of ? What is he afraid of us knowing that could possibly do him harm in any fashion since he's omnipotent and perfect (i.e., self-fulfilling and having all sufficiency in himself) ? Could it be that men made God in prehistory, and they made up the myth of the two trees in the garden, hoping no one in the future would decide to start thinking for him or herself, and learn that the God these men made up did not really exist and no longer serve these men's interests by blind, unthinking, obedience and submission ?
The Bible is so stuffed with violence committed in the name of God, and calls to blind obedience (the equal of brainwashing), that when a reasonable, intelligent man or woman reads it, they simply can only balk at it. They cannot condone it nor justify it, so they reject it. If they do not become outright and complete atheists they will, at least, be atheists toward the God of Judeo/Christianity.
Isaac Asimov spoke truly. If you're objective and you read the Bible, it is a very strong argument against the existence of that particular God. The Bible is a very potent force for atheism to those who read it dispassionately and objectively.
