The Jews Killed Jesus - Christianity's Biggest Lie?

i was just watching this video on youtube, "the hidden jesus" where a christian theologian explores other religions with stories similar to the jesus story.

what got my attention was in part six where he makes the claim that "for the last 2000 years christianity and judaism have been at war over jesus. why? because of what some consider christianity's biggest lie."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltZltysPz5A&feature=related

(you don't actually even have to watch the whole clip).

anyhoo, from my catholic school days, we were never taught that the jews were christ-killers or anything bad like that... (well, that's a different subject...)

but basically, the bible i read said that pontius pilate didn't want anything to do with jesus' execution. he didn't break a law... so he "washed his hands of him" and had him whipped and then handed him over to the local rabble who were calling for jesus' death. the romans as occupiers of the city of jerusalem maintained the peace but let the mob go to town and kill the guy (by a roman method).

i personally doubt that jesus ever really existed. and the trial and "passion" stories have SO MANY HOLES in them, i doubt they can be taken seriously by classical scholars.

but the stories we have in the canon clearly state that the roman authorities whipped him and handed him over to the mob. the romans did not crucify the guy.

is this christianity's greatest lie?

what do you think?

"but the stories we have in the canon clearly state that the roman authorities whipped him and handed him over to the mob. the romans did not crucify the guy."

That doesn't work. Crucifixion was an exclusively and specifically Roman punishment; it was considered the highest form of capital penalty, and was reserved for rebels, pirates and run-away slaves. Jesus was considered a rebel.

As for whether or not the canon says that Jesus was crucified, errrrrrrm:

"24And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get." (Mark 15)

"35When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.[b] 36And sitting down, they kept watch over him there." (Matthew 27)

"33When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left." (Luke 23)

"17Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18Here they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle." (John 19)

So I'm sorry, but what are you talking about? The gospels make it very clear that Jesus was crucified, and that this was done by the Romans. Where are you getting all this?

You're actually going into the wrong direction with this: it wasn't the Jews that wanted Jesus dead; he had nothing wrong in their eyes. The Romans were the ones who wanted trouble-makers like Jesus dead.

If I can give you some advice; don't take any of Beckford's stuff seriously.
