And no, the father of our country wasn't God, despite what many think. This "father" was George Washington.

I have, over the past 3 years or so, read bios on John Adams, Tom Jefferson, James Madison, Lincoln, Grant, Truman, etc., but for some reason skipped over George. The library has many books about him and one caught my attention: An Imperfect God: George Washington, His Slaves and the Creation of America.

It concentrated less on his accomplishments, more on his character, especially regarding how he felt about blacks and slavery. In a word, he was contradictory. Maybe that was because he evolved in his thinking about the whole slavery issue. Yes, he needed slaves to run his plantation, but he abhored the practice (at least frowned upon). He kept his feelings to himself. In his Will, he finally let the cat out of the bag, freeing all his slaves (after Martha's death!). Not even Jefferson did this.

I came to admire the man more than ever. Interesting and different book by Henry Wiencek.

Perhaps the greatest piece of garbage I ever read  (the past two nights) was The Victory of Reason by Rodney Stark. The title stirred my curiosity when browsing at the library. He claims it was Christianity that was responsible for Western civilization success, freedom of the people, and capitalism. And he based this all on Christian's "faith in reason". Christianity is directly responsible for the most significant intellectual, political, scientific, and ecomonic breakthroughs of the past millennium.  How ridiculous to pair religious beliefs with reason. His logic was full of holes. What hokum.
