Survey Says: 78% of Quebecers are not religious

"Personally, do you consider yourself to be a religious person? (Total % YES)"

This last weekend I was at the pharmacy waiting for a prescription to be filled and picked up a copy of the Journal de Montreal.  In it I found a survey conducted by Leger Marketing for l'Agence QMI (Quebecor).  The highlights of the survey can be found on the web at Les deux solitudes s’éloignent (more or less: The Two Solitudes Are Drifting Apart).  An English article on the survey can be found here.

Here's a link to the full post:

Yeah, the RCC have a long and sordid history of oppression and meddling in government in QC. The pushback will probably continue for a long time. Probably the best marketing atheism has ever had in N. America.

Peter: Wow, that's a fascinating story!  I've been told that my own Catholic youth was a walk in the park compared to how things were only a generation before.

Ha! You can thank the Catholic Church for this one….

I'm not surprised by that result. I grew up in Quebec when it was still under the boot heel of the Catholic church.

My parents separated when I was about 3 years old but because there was no divorce there was no protection for children of broken homes. There was also no form of birth control permitted in Quebec which resulted in some very big families. Of all our immediate neighbors our family was the third largest with 7 children. The family on one side had 8 and the one behind us had 9 children. One family in our town of 1200 people had 15 kids.

Eventually the population began to rebel. People went to Ontario, New York, or Vermont for birth control products. It was possible to get a divorce but that required an act of federal parliament. Once the provincial government changed the laws the stampede was on. Quebec went from having the highest birth rate in Canada to having the lowest.

It appears that the backlash is continuing and more people are rejecting the overbearing control of religion. That gives me much hope for the future.
