Signing Atheists
I was going to set up a group for Deaf Atheists, but figured I'd probably be alone in here if I did that so I figured I'd open it to anyone who knows sign language or even interested in learning it.

Since I'm a senior in high school, I've been getting a lot of stuff from colleges interested in me. Phone calls, mailers, email, DVDs, you get the idea. Usually they just ask how my college search is going, and since I've decided to attend my community college first, the calls have shortened considerably.
I just got a call from Simpson U, a college in I-don't-know-where. The guy on their end asks me casually how I'm doing (this seems to be the most common question). Then he talks a little about how Simpson is a christin university, and asks me if I am "Christian, Catholic, anything like that?" So I respond, "Well, actually, I'm an Atheist."
He seemed a bit lost after that; kept on "umm...okay, uhh...well..." After about a minute he asked me why I was an Atheist, and I said, "I like to have evidence for things before I believe in something." More umming, and then he said, timidly, "Well, yeah I suppose that [wanting evidence for things] would conflict with jesus christ." The call just kind of ended after that; I think telling him I was an Atheist threw him off his talking points.
Oh well, thats what happens when you make a claim and have no evidence to support it.

well done. i'm in college, in what some Americans call 'the bible belt'. i had no clue about this term for the midwest until i started interacting with atheists online. the only atheist i know is me. i would like for that to change :(

Well done. It's fun to see the effect the A-word has on some people. It's like telling them that your hobby is hating puppies.

That is fantastic. I wonder if the guy that called you was just as much a sheep as the rest of his religion. I think there may have been hope for him if he gave an answer like that. :P
