How is it possible for someone to say they are anti war ,yet support the troops? In this day and age of information, how can anyone be proud that they served in the military, now knowing what the wars are all about.......being a veteran I would never support the troops as supporting the troops is supporting war........and are their atheist in foxholes? Fuck yeah! Although I never served in combat how could anyone who has seen the ravages of war believe in a gawd other than man?

I am very anti-war. My brother has been in the army for over 10 years. The maximum amount of 'support' I can offer is my sincere wish that he remains alive. But to the extent of supporting him philosophically, politically, financially, no. Not even if it means his or other soldiers death. This possibility disturbs me but if we are to stand and hold firm in our morality it must mean that it applies to all of us indiscriminately. A soldier who voluntarily enters the military and commits a murder IS a murderer. And if they have any conscience they will have to deal with this fact. A soldier costume doesn't give a man permission to kill children, adults, anyone. Even to threaten such violence by any means is immoral.

However, all that being said. If,  strike that, WHEN a soldier is scarred from committing these horrible things I believe totally in our society being supportive in rehabilitating them. Teach these men and women to live a good and wise life being a living example against war. I feel that this would be a worthy humanist pursuit. The very worst thing we can do as a culture is tell these scarred moral beings that their actions were justified. To do this would be to invalidate everything that a peaceful and reasonable society holds as virtue.

It's hard to support those who willingly walk into the "meat grinder" for a myth or oil. When King George II invaded Iraq my nephew told me if the dumb ass reinstated the draft he would run to Canada. My wife and I told him we would help him get there. My overly patriotic methodist pastor brother was shit-fire angry with us. He told me if he were young enough he would go in a heart beat. I told him about a story I heard on NPR about a shortage of clergy in the military and they were taking men his age and older to minister to the troops. He could go if he really wanted. I called his bluff and he blew a gasket. So much fun! Freakin' chicken hawk!

the veterans I know are some of the most religious zealots I know. I actually entirely agree supporting war and joining the military with the intent of going to war is insane and should not be encouraged. glad to know I'm not the only one who feels this way.
