I've just had an encounter with some doorstepping Jehovah's at my dad's house. I sent them packing with my 'I'm an atheist and I'm not prepared to argue with you' speech. Then as I left the house my aunty (lives next door) and 1 of my cousins were on the step. The cousin (a pain in the arse if ever there was one) started asking about the Jehovah's to which I explained what I said. He and the aunty then started going on about how 1 day I'll realise the error of my ways and come back.

He then said he had some spare medals in his car and he'd give me a St. Christopher for mine! Now I know for some people this would be an uncomfortable situation to be in with family members but it just makes me want to howl laughing. Almost to a man my entire faith-holding family are crazy and there is no point whatsoever in engaging them in any kind of rational conversation about religion because they aren't rational.

They all subscribe to the idea that catholicism is the only religion of any merit - fellow xians are misguided and anything beyond xianity is totally wrong. They all believe that I am having a temporary loss of mind and that before I die, I'll be craving the last rites and trying to make my peace with god. The aunty I can more or less understand, her being in her 70s and never trusting anybody beyond her parents and siblings, the cousin however is the same age as me (40) and was an R.E. teacher (that is until he left his wife for another teacher and the school couldn't sanction such hypocrisy). It's mind boggling to me how anybody with a modicum of intelligence can still subscribe to the idiocy of the rc church. In my opinion the only thing it's good for is the slew of superstitions that can be used to make a good horror story - Exorcism anyone?

Sorry to all of you who have to really struggle with defending your atheism, but this is as bad as it gets for me and to be honest, I could do with more of it just for the ensuing giggles.

The best thing is that I convinced one witness once - at my door (not at the beach, lol) - that religion is responsible for all the terrors in the world. And yet she still tried to plug her shit. I couldn't understand it - she was actually agreeing with me.

Of course she was. I can explain the apparent contradiction. Witnesses do believe that "false" religion is responsible for most wars and armed conflicts. To their credit, they have maintained neutrality in local and world conflicts. In many countries, young Witness men have been imprisoned for a number of years as a matter of course for refusal to serve in the military. The Witnesses see themselves as the only "true" Christians, viewing the rest of Christendom as corrupted versions of the "one true faith". In this context, it makes sense that she would have agreed with your condemnation of religion.

Amer, I think that all religions that promote ignorance, hatred- of self and others, judgmentalism and irrational fear are equally damaging to human progress- personal and societal. That ex-believers tend to focus on the negative aspects of the religion they're most familiar with is understandable.

I do agree that the ex-believer consumed with "bringing down" their former brand of faith is taking a somewhat myopic approach to counteracting a much broader threat.

Don't worry - I'm equally horrified by Islam, Hinduism, and protestant fundamentalists. Not a good idea to get me talking about Baptists - which was where I came from. This post was about catholic family members, so I stuck to catholic, which is one of the biggest and most powerful. I don't know enough about buddhism to coment - it's out of my usual sphere of knowledge.

Amer don't misunderstand me, I am fully aware of how reprehensible other religions are. I just find it odd that anybody would choose catholicism as something to turn to, in the same way I find islam a bizarre choice. I'd like to think people want more choice in their lives rather than less.

It's telling how catholicism is on the rise in 'developing' countries and on the wane in 'developed' countries. Here in the UK it's evidenced by the number of churches closing and parishes being amalgamated. In Liverpool the largest turn out for catholic mass is in the cathedral, which is the parish for the hospital staff. Anyone care to guess the nationality of most of those parishioners?

The priest gives lipservice to education. But he knows, if people are properly educated...they'll quit being Catholics.

This video was linked elsewhere on A|N but I think is relevant here as well. It shows a vivid example of the great harm done by the catholic church, even now in the 21st century. The church and its leaders continue to exert control over the government of the Phillipines, causing misery, poverty, and ignorance. Without the conteracting effects of other religions and secular governements / institutions, it's what it would be like everywhere. It's horrible.

Family members distance themselves from me as well. I, in turn, keep the distance as a result. We really only have each other through these sites or the few nontheists we know in person. Let's stay together.
