Starting a local meet up? Why not?

I've had the urge to meet up with local freethinkers and atheists for a while now. But the only local group is dedicated to humanism, and weren't so much into the socializing and enjoying a stimulating conversation type of thing. Plus they only meet once a month, and I need more face-time than that.

Living in my local community, there's not much to choose from. So, finally, I just said, "What the heck, I'll start it myself." With the help of Atheist Nexus' features like easily starting a new Group, and creating Events, and being able to connect with existing self-identified atheists, I've already set up a Windsor Atheists group, and scheduled our first Windsor Atheists Meet Up event. So far so good. We'll see where it goes from here.

One of the things that initially held me back from doing this is that I want to maintain a certain level of anonymity in my online atheist activities. But the desire to meet local atheists just became greater than my desire to remain unidentifiable. So, to heck with it. If people know I'm currently living in Windsor, so be it.

So, if you happen to be one of those anonymous types, and you're from Windsor (or nearby), I've outed my location so you don't have to. Come join us for a chat amongst friends.

If you're an atheist in your own local community, and wishing there was a way to meet local atheists, why not start your own group and see what comes of it? It's worth a shot!

We just had our first gathering of Nexus folks in Vermont. I personally have beef with Meetup, as I ran a group there years ago, and after putting in lots of time and energy creating a group and giving Meetup free advertising, they started charging group creators. At the time, I could not afford to pay to keep my group afloat. So, it went bye bye.

Atheist Nexus is owned and run by atheists. People can start groups here for free. The purpose of the site is to be a place for non-theists to network. It's why I do all my organizing/disorganizing here.

Hope all goes well with your group!
