Seth Andrews - "The Ultimate Question"

Seth Andrews is NOT “The Thinking Atheist.”  He’ll tell you this himself, and doubtless, he’s tired of disavowing that that sobriquet was in any way meant to represent him.  He wanted it to be an icon to represent atheists who THINK, who have reasoned their way to the conclusion: “Religion simply does not make sense.”  All the above notwithstanding, there can be no argument that Mr. Andrews is A thinking atheist, even if he isn’t THE Thinking Atheist.

As evidence to my above assertion, I submit for your perusal a video of a lecture he gave in April of this year in San Diego, California, entitled, “The Ultimate Question.”  Rather an intimidating and daunting topic, that, and while Seth comes at the matter circuitously, he is adept enough to provide us, if not with a definitive “ultimate question,” then with the elements which would qualify such a question as “ultimate”.  He cites some well-considered parameters for such a query toward the end of his talk, and you’ll pardon me if I spoil the surprise by replicating them here

Seth is a modest person, gentle and self-effacing.  He created The Thinking Atheist podcast as a means of creating a community, of gathering like-minded people about him, but also as a means of providing an educational narrative for those of us who need help when wrestling with questions and making sure the answers ARE, indeed, answers and not diversions or excuses.  Despite his modesty, Seth is also a very wise man, made so by his honest journey from belief to atheism and what he has done with the products of that journey.  This is particularly evinced by the very end of the video, with a piece which he reads verbatim from something he was inspired to write while “in the zone” and which reminds me in places remarkably of Christopher Hitchens “Poisoned Chalice” speech, given likely scant months before we lost him.  Seth has transcribed his own inspired words here, for those of you who can’t wait to the end.

And if you can't wait, it's a shame, because the words that come before are very much of the same quality, and I commend you to them.  Please enjoy … and to Seth Andrews, I simply say, “Thank you … a LOT.”

Michael, I agree, Marriage and many other things: baptism, weddings, funerals, all provide ways to link an individual to the institution of the church and he and she pays dearly for it.

I did indeed, Joan.  That and Seth's video, "Saving Number 90," told me that Seth Andrews is a multifaceted person, which I think is a VERY good thing.

Seth Andrews has great talent and uses it to great effect. He is smart, confident, competent, and funny. Did you see the video of his cat, Kat?

My pleasure, Christopher.  From where I sit, I see Seth as being as important a voice in his own way as any of the heavyweights of atheism.  I'm glad you enjoyed what he had to say.

I'm aware of some of his work. Watched a few of his videos. I've skipped to the end and read his very well written letter to agree totally. When he gets into "normal" everyday life right down to a description of marriage, his words of what we expect rings so true. Look how much of this crap came right out of the Buybull. We are all just sheep.

The strange thing here is that the church did not "take over" marriage until the 1500's. Prior to that marriage did not of necessity have to come from the Buybull. We can obnly assume that somebody thought it was "a good idea."
