I asked my family this weekend why they as Christians feel it is OK to lie to their children about Santa Clause.  I explained that, to me, it seemed quite hypocritical that one of the Christian tenants is not to lie, but yet in celebration of the very beginning of Christianity Christians lie to their children about this man who brings toys. The answer I got was because it brings so much joy to the children.  So, is it one of those "ends justifies the means" types of things?

I am a fairly new atheist.  I am curious as to the thoughts of the other atheists on this site as to dealing with this situation.  I have no children, so it's really a mute point for me, but I was just curious as to everyone's thoughts.

Since when do you see Christians following their own rules and guidelines? Something you should not forget is that they believe they don't need to always tell the truth in order to get into heaven. Nor do they have to stop themselves from murdering another person. Jesus wipes the slate clean!

Still, I don't think telling their kids Santa exists does that much harm. It's equivalent to pretending that the tooth fairy exists. Playing with children and encouraging their creativity and imagination is good for their development. I would also state that most parents remember how much fun it was believing in Santa and our culture promotes that idea.

Similarly, it's good for atheists in two ways. First, Christmas is becoming more and more commercialized and Santa seems to be helping us out. Secondly, as children learn that they've been lied to about Santa, they might also question other things their parents have told them!

Something else you should ask is, why aren't they giving their extra income to the poor? After all, isn't being rich a bad thing according to Jesus? You can cite the Bible verses about how the poor are blessed and that line about a camel and the eye of a needle. Truth be told, though, Christian's see nothing wrong with ignoring their own beliefs when they are inconvenient.

Well, children are basically property to a lot of parents. It takes the
rebellious stage in adolescence to disabuse them of this idea. So, to
them, you can no more lie to your kid than you could a piece of
furniture.
