What was it they said at the Chicago convention back when?  Oh, yeah:

The whole world is watching ... the whole world is watching ... The Whole World is Watching ... THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING...!

Loren, you really hit the nail on the head.  That is exactly what needs to happen.  And with cell phones, web cams, and internet technology, it would be all over the planet.

It would make for an .... INTERESTING Olympics, to be sure, SB.  Could be made MORE interesting if GLBT participants who were willing to be OUT did something like wear something in common, say something with a rainbow triangle or something like.  Add to that a statement from the Olympic Committees of their nations, expressing solidarity and support for ALL athletes: gay, straight, Lesbian, ANY ORIENTATION ... and perhaps a not-too-subtle hint that any action taken against their athletes would foment both immediate political reaction and intense TV coverage.  Sure, Putin can probably do something about the TV coverage, but with an event like that, he won't be able to control it all, and any action he takes to try to squelch coverage is only going to make him look that much worse.

It'd take some serious stones to pull it off - that IS Russia after all - though wasn't it Frederick the Great who said, "Audacity ... always audacity!"

Jesse Owens ran in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and earned a place ih history, embarrassing the Nazi racists.  It was a powerful moment and something to reflect on, in the history of combating racism and oppressive regimes.

Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave a black power salute during the 1968 olympics.  Even though they were ostracisized, and angered many, to me it's a strong statement, and heroic.  Much better than boycotting.

I always thing of the Olympics as about national pride and propaganda, as much as about individualism and athletic achievement.  If it wasn't we wouldn't tally up medals by nation.

I really want to see Blake Skjellerup win a medal.  It would be awesome.  And a positive example to demonized LGBT people in Russia, and embarrass their bigoted opportunist govt.

Especially pathetically self aware supermacho Putin.  A gay medal winner in the Russian Olympics would so discredit the somewhat too-masculine-to-be-real Russian Rambo.

Mathew, we tried that in 1980 after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.  Frankly, it went over like a lead balloon, had no real impact.  It would be one thing if Putin were listening or if he even cared, but he doesn't, and the fact of the matter is, Putin IS the government there.

I'd totally open to suggestions that would have at least some degree of impact, because right now, I'm fresh out.

The situation in Russia keeps getting worse and worse.

So, Russia reserves the right to act like assholes during a highly significant international event.  Seems to me US Secretary of State John Kerry needs to have a LONG talk with his opposite number in the Russian Federation ... with the understanding that any untoward action on ANY American athlete (and for that matter, any participating Olympian) will have unfortunate consequences vectored directly at the Russian government.

I think a similar conversation with the International Olympic Committee, as regards sites for future Olympics, would be equally well advised.

well, what this would mean is that any athlete who is gay has to fear being outed, and any athlete who is out has to fear for his safety and for his life and freedom.

If the athletes have not openly come out as gay how would they know who to arrest?
