Atheist Nexus

The World’s Largest Coalition of Nontheists and Nontheist Communities!

This is going to be short. I figured I'd like to consider something.

Natural disasters in the last month:

April 27th: Huge thunderstorm spawned 137 tornadoes, 180 dead (US, Alabama), Dead fish hauled away in NY

May: Dead fish washup, Mississippi flooding.

May 3rd and 4th: More dead fish wash up.

May 3rd: Deadly tornado, New Zealand

May 15th: 6.5 Magnitude earthquake, Papua New Guinea

May 22nd: Deadly tornadoes in Minneapolis, MN, and Joplin, MO.

May 24th: Deadly tornado in Oklahoma

And then there's the people who pray for basketball games to be won, sports teams who thank god when they win. And then we end up with situations like this?

This is why I can't believe in a god.

The thing about natural disasters is this. I think it is less about their frequency than the fact that there are more of us to get in the way of such things. When tornado ally was sparsely populated tornados affected just a few. Now where there were fields of wheat there are now huge tracts of homes. Homes by the way which are new but for some reason lack one basic necessity in that region. Storm cellers. WTF .  Hey lets build some houses on a flood plain and be shocked when the river spreads out and engulfs those homes. Better yet in the case of New Orleans. Lets build a city below sea level and scream at politicians for not keeping water out of the bowl. What is wrong with us that we put ourselves in harms way even though we know better and are always shocked when something bad happens?

It was all part of God's divine wisdom that some people will have shards of glass ripping through them and/or be slowly crushed under debris.
