Day after day I see Atheist Nexus members argue scripture details, spreading theistic memes here, without realizing their self-betrayal. Memetics still seems, to most, an abstract intellectual debate. We can't grasp religion as an infective agent. We can't see ourselves as merely copying machines for viruses.

A visual metaphor intrudes on my mind, of atheists holding one inch feces balls in their palms, peering at them closely. "Look at these glittery golden bits on the top." "No those look like silvery sparkles to me." "But these green inclusions below them are more striking, take a look!"

Imagine religions as infective agents which pass to hosts through feces, as many parasitic worms do. Infected feces balls draw the attention of new hosts, who pick them up and absorb the virus as they linger. Then hosts begin to produce identical feces balls, to pass around to everyone else. People become zombie copying machines for the infection, without knowing. While many hosts become knowing dedicated parasite spreaders, others pick up and spread the virus to make fun of the poo lure.

"This doesn't make sense, how can a ball be glittery green and sparkly pink at the same time? Take this one in your hand to examine it closely. Don't you see the contradiction?"

"Take this one, see how disgusting!" "No, this other ball is even more revolting, (passing it over)?"

RELIGION MEMEPLEXES ARE A PARASITIC INFECTION!

Quoting scripture to criticize it, satirizing Jesus, they're alternative ways to pass the poo. It's still infected poo. The only defense is "Call it infected poo and don't pick it up." Don't give it a place in your brain. Don't make it come out of your mouth, or type it out with your keyboard. It's a mind virus. VIRUS!

This is not to imply that I'm immune. I've posted satire which spreads those religious memes too. *sigh* We have to start by recognizing our role in viral contagion.

hm, for a minute I though Ruth might be posting about possible causes for her IBS - but no, it was more anti-religion talk.

Gosh, it has been two years since you posted this string. I think of it often, and still get on a rampage. OK Joan, pay attention here; be aware of spreading the stinking, filthy, infectious, disgusting fecal matter of religion.

In societies where there's quite a bit of infected poo already around, maybe criticism and satire has a role in reducing the infection, perhaps even being a vaccine of sorts by stimulating someone's mental "immune system" before they've been indoctrinated.

TNT666, thanks to you and Ruth, I know I spout poo when I rant. Yes, you correctly state,

"I'd say 80% of atheists on this site have let go of gods but not the excess religiosity/morality baggage stuck in their minds. Time to let go. Any faith is virus, spirituality is virus, economics is virus, patriarchy is virus. I much enjoyed the book Snow Crash, partly about language as virus."

Poo has a quality that makes it an excellent binder to build buildings out of straw and sticks. Poo also clings to clothing and skin and porcelain and is very difficult to cleanse away. Perhaps we need a toilet site in which we can vent our excrement and flush it away!

On the other hand, I know that to break a habit, one needs to figure out a way to stop doing it. Like putting a rubber band on a wrist and snapping it painfully every time a poo thought comes into the brain. Or hit a thumb with a hammer with each poo thought.

It is my responsibility to change my thinking patterns. However, I will value a knock up the side of my head when you catch me spreading my excrement.

Searching for Infocalypse on Amazon leads to Second World ?

Interesting, TNT666, "Infocalypse". "... a mind-altering romp through a future America so bizarre, so outrageous...you'll recognize it immediately." That' sounds like a fascinating take on language as virus.

There are ridiculous amounts of recently converted atheists who think that time wasted arguing such nonsense is a valid use of time. Were they not indoctrinated in the first place, they would not think of such a waste of time as worthwhile, it is their religious indoctrination which still rules their lives. So when stupid statistics spout: atheists know religion better than faithers, I vomit a little in my mouth. To get away from supernatural gods is easy, to get away from all the BS that got into that sickness is the challenge, and I'd say 80% of atheists on this site have let go of gods but not the excess religiosity/morality baggage stuck in their minds. Time to let go. Any faith is virus, spirituality is virus, economics is virus, patriarchy is virus. I much enjoyed the book Snow Crash, partly about language as virus.

danny Kay, I agree with you 100% except, and this is a 100% disagree statement. People who believe stories from the Bronze Age, and some of the strange things some believe are fine until and unless they start fooling around with legislation, having a say in fiscal matters, attempting to put their religious words onto public buildings and into public affairs, and when they think they are being rational when they want to bring intelligent design and creationism into public schools, I object, loudly, powerfully, vindictively, and even attempt to be as cruel as I can be. I have no reason to placate them or patronize them or twaddle around them. I DO NOT WANT THEM IN MY GOVERNMENT OR IN MY EDUCATION SYSTEMS.

People who want prayers in public events can do their praying quietly, I will not disturb them. However, if they expect me to sit around while religious people pontificate about their spirit world, I have no obligation to respect them or treat them with respect.

I stopped arguing religion many years ago.  To believe in such things is a reflection of mental instability which could be easily cured with modern day medicines and therapy.  Would you argue with "Napoleon" at a mental hospital and try to pursuade him he is not?  same thing.

I look at relig-o's with sadness and sympathy.... they need help...one soul at a time... lol...

Diane,

Yesterday I was on a date with a christian. She knows I am an atheist. I coughed. She said bless you. I said that is offensive to me. She of course looked at me in disbelief. Then I explained the origin of bless you.

None of it made any impression. Christian priv. is sooooo pervasive.
