Doctor visited, blood tests good, plane reservations completed. I'm all set to go.

Yep, I'm going to Greece come Sunday (9-22) for two weeks. Way last January I signed up for a Sierra Club trip entitled "Hiking the Greek Islands". I've always wanted to go to Greece--home of democracy, philosophy, science, literature, etc. So I plucked down my $3000 and will join 15 unknown others to fulfill my dream (I won't use the term "bucket list").

It's more than just touring the Parthenon and other famous sites (but does include those). The idea of hiking around the adjacent islands caught my attention. I'm not much of a museum guy--more outdoorsy. We'll be walking 6-7 miles each day and staying in nice hotels. This sounds like an ideal "vacation".

Naturally (?) I'm a little nervous/anxious about a number of things: flight delays, what to pack, and more. It's a little out of my comfort zone. And I don't own a cell phone for emergencies.

So, wish me luck and safe travels--no prayers please!

Have a great time! I've been to Crete quite a few times, and used-up half the photons available in the world, with all the pictures I took!

Have a great time!

If you aren't interested in ancient ruins/culture, why not just go to southern California?  Isn't it a lot like Greece?

I think Australia would be a great place for an outdoorsy person, with all the strange marsupials.

Or perhaps Africa.

Randall, sounds like a great adventure. My fear would be getting stuck with slow poke hikers.

Wonderful!  Have fun.  Tell us about your trip.  Enjoy the food.

I'm not sure - this might be the season for fresh figs and grapes.  Far different from what you might think from US experience.  Then there's lots of other great food.

When I was young and the Neanderthals were still partying on the Mediterranian shores, I was stationed in Turkey for 18 months.  I took a couple of weeks off and visited Greece.  I remember enjoying it a lot.

As a history buff and autodidact student of religions and social history, I would love to trod those soils too.  Have fun Randall!

I'm envious. My last great adventure was about 4 years ago.  After travelling through a third country, and meeting sundry individuals for the appropriate paper work, I ended up smoking a Cohiba Robusto while drinking a Mojito sitting at a sidewalk cafe in Havana, Cuba. I will say it was on my bucket list, and am damn glad I did it.

Hope you have an absolute blast! And be cautious with the local Ouzo. I've heard it can readily give one a completely alternate sense of reality. Enjoy!
