Comment by Tonya Wynn on July 25, 2012 at 5:20pm Pandora, I'm sorry the insurance company screwed you. Sue them. But why must I now be forced to spend $3k a yr, to buy insurance? I study how to stay healthy. Many in my family are sick from a poor diet. You are sick from a poor diet. You are overweight.

And government mandates won't make them any better. Only a truly free market, free of government influence makes them improve. Keep supporting ObamaCare and you'll see it gets no better.
Comment by Nathan Ortberg on July 17, 2012 at 3:19am OK, I admit I didn't read all of the responses in their entirety, however I have something to say. There was a time before government intervention and regulation on health care that people paid for regular doctor visits out of their pocket and major medical crisis was the only reason you needed health care. Te reason for this was and truly free market that regulated itself. Siding with government mandated health insurance is only compounding the problem. Private, and yes, for profit medical establishments were just fine prior to government intervention. The god ol' days were good because government didn't interfere where they should not. Those ridiculous bills you are stuck with aren't because of private for profit organizations, but rather government funded and regulated "non-profit" organizations. I keep trying to say this and everyone on this thread ignores me...I suspect because they lack sources to prove this idea wrong, simply because it IS the reason why healthcare has gone to shit. I welcome contrary views, but I have not encountered a logical contrary view.
Comment by PandoraBoxe on July 16, 2012 at 4:11pm @Tonya.... I was two weeks in hospital, missing my left kidney, expecting some help from the insurance company i had been a client of for ten years. I was too sick and it took me two months to recover and by that time, it was like running headlong into a brick wall to even find someone at that company who would listen to me, let alone find an attorney who would take on UHC at a price I could afford. I only make so much and ALL I make goes to pay my bills. Was not in a position to add the cost of an attorney to sue a company with pockets so deep they could fight me until my last breath.
HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES SUCK!
Comment by Tonya Wynn on July 16, 2012 at 1:34pm I'll be the first to say that many of the large health insurance companies cheat their clients. But, sue them!! Not easy, but more fair.
Comment by annet on July 15, 2012 at 1:54pm I think OBAMACARE IS AWESOME. It allows my college aged son to stay on our insurance and being a woman cannot be used as a pre-existing condition as it has been in the past. I also am very happy to pay for other people's kids with my property taxes and would gladly pay more even though I'm considered low income. Those kids make our world and we are all in this together. I think narcissism is trying to be a lone island instead of part of a village. I do not measure other people's value by how much I can profit from them, and I don't feel the need to protect rich people in case I suddenly become one of them. However, I don't have hard feelings against people who disagree on any of these things. Obviously there are fundamental and potentially insurmountable differences of opinion between me and Randian philosophy who it seems to me had serious empathy problems. Such is the wondrous diversity of human brain chemistry.
Comment by Greg LeGore on July 15, 2012 at 12:38pm So when did we start thinking that health care should be a for-profit activity, with CEOs and others getting multi-million dollar paydays? And why should our employer be at all involved? If we do single payer, we have one payer but private not government care.
Comment by PandoraBoxe on July 15, 2012 at 9:15am Well, I'm not sure I've ever heard "preventation" other than the name of a flea med for a canine.
Sounds like all of you can afford health insurance. Or, have never been dropped as a client of a health insurance company for a bogus "pre-existing" condition.
I cannot get health insurance because United HealthCare, in their own inimitable style, dropped my ass in 2004. I had been their client for more than ten years, paying in my regular monthly premiums... and for what? I ended up in the hospital with an infected kidney. Also, at that time, diagnosed with diabetes. NEVER WAS THERE ANY MENTION OF EITHER IN MY MEDICAL RECORDS PRIOR TO THAT SUNDAY. UHC DROPPED my account and I ended up with a $115,000+ hospital bill after a two week stay and a left nephrectomy.
If the ACA (affordable care act) can help me get coverage because it denies the ability of multi-million dollar companies to determine that I all of a sudden have a pre-existing condition, then I am all for it!
Health Insurance companies suck.
Comment by Nathan Ortberg on July 14, 2012 at 11:37pm How insanely narcissistic have we become to think that the government and other tax payers are responsible to take care of our health? Why is it terrible and cold hearted to think that people should provide for themselves, healthcare included? The government creates a market where we can't afford things, then we ask the government, and ultimately tax payers to take care of these things for us. When did we become so fucking entitled???
Comment by Nathan Ortberg on July 14, 2012 at 11:33pm To bring that back on topic, things like ObamaCare encourage the nanny state and further remove competition from the market. Prices go through the roof and the goal is no longer to achieve a dream, but rather to tread water and survive. The government can not be our lifeline, we must be the lifeline of America. People who dream and work toward goals and opportunities know how to use their money best. Giving that money to the government or being subjected to mandates says that the government knows what is best for every person and that they can not be trusted with their own money. It is destruction of the individual and their liberty while tanking the idea of a free market that regulates itself through competition rather than a government that regulates poorly and bails everyone out throwing itself deeper into debt and devaluing our currency and ultimately our way of life.
