Been a bystander for the last year since joining this group. Mostly reading news posted here and any atheist material I can get my hands on. Well, decided to stop sitting on the fence and really start doing something. Would like to find other like-minded folks living in Hong Kong, discuss with them, organize, and take action to promote scientific thought and atheist ideals, and to assist in putting an end to the destructive superstition that faith based religions bring along.

Wow, that is actually frightening for those kids. I only had the brainwashing treatment from a few evangelical friends/ family members. I guess I figured that being near China/ Vietnam would indicate less problems with Christian indoctrination, but shows how much Eastern geography I know...
I guess you have heard about the Noah's Ark park they are supposed to build in Kentucky over here? Sounds like the same thing. It would be pretty funny if they weren't serious about it. I am not in that state but I know the atmosphere. We are up to our ears, as you say!

Hi Lyra:

I think "a lot" would be an understatement. Practically all of the "good" schools in Hong Kong are run by Christian groups. There is no separation of church and state, and every kid is brainwashed from day one to believe in the sky king, pray during morning assemblies and before each meal. Not to mention, they all have "religious studies" class. But guess what? The only religion they learn is Christianity. Several months ago, when Hong Kong tourists were killed in the Philippines, there were Christian vigils that looked like cult practices. Seriously, I am not exaggerating or mocking them. The newspapers all reported those activities and took pictures of these people in gestures that are simply scary, like upturned eyes, palms pointing towards the sky, that type of thing you would expect that brainwashed cult followers would do. And to give you a sense of how part of the social fabric Christianity is here in Hong Kong, we have one of the first "Noah's Ark" theme park. A truly atrocious piece of superstitious architecture. How about that for a start? Ha.

So, in short, I am up to my ears with this craziness!

Le,

(thanks for your message!)

Good for you, Zhi Le! I am pretty much a bystander in real life right now, newly identified as an atheist too. Do you encounter a lot of irrational theists in your country?
