New Definition of Theism: Highly Contaminated Mindware

Firstly some definitions:

Mindware: Essentially a collection of tools we use to think with or make decisions.

These include, Information or Data and Methods of applying these.

Contaminated Mindware: Essentially incorrect or misleading data, often from bad or heavily biased sources and which lacks any form of reliable or independently verified data.

Where the only genuine source of verified data is Science, where data must be independently replicable in order to confirm it's value as data.

Such contamination/corruption also comes from influences such as: Egotism or over zealous self  importance, Biases which usually arise from being fed too much Contaminated Information, Irrational (Unsupported By Evidence) Belief Systems and Associated Dogma / Doctrines. Corrupted Mindware can also result from brain damage and Childhood Indoctrination and Experiences which the individual may not be conscious of.  Such childhood indoctrination and early environmental influences show up in the individual's Heuristics, which they make many of their short term automatic decisions on.  Corrupted heuristics are the hardest contamination to remove and many quite good critical thinkers still make poor decisions when heuristics take control.

As anybody can observe: Theism is not the only source of Contaminated nor Corrupted Mindware, as there are numerous sources of damage to Mindware, starting from early childhood influences to poor education and being misled by such influences as superstition, learning incorrect legal, moral, psychological, scientific models.

One simple rule is: If it fits into the generally accepted scientific model, it has a higher probability of truthfulness than those that do not fit.

Yet: Religion is the most powerful, widely adopted and promoted force for Extreme Mindware Contamination On Earth.

The open minded Individual must be ever diligent when considering information and models and avoid religion completely.

Here are Steve Pavlina's (a popular life coach) reasons why people should never have a religion:

http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2008/05/10-reasons-you-should-neve...

Because religion corrupts mindware and makes people stupid.

Just some amusing armchair psychology from Steve Pavlina, being an IT type, has an amusing description of human Mindware issues by reference to Computer Hardware.

http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2007/06/10-weaknesses-of-human-int...

Though Steve has his own contaminated Mindware issues with his Heuristically derived notions of Lucid Dreaming, so nobody is safe from having their mindware contaminated.

http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/category/lucid-dreaming/

Though everybody has some form of contaminated mindware whether from aberrant unrealistic personal perceptions and experiences (heuristics) like Steve Pavlina's lucid dream delusion  or poor education.

The following is an excerpt from Psych Central:

__________________________________________________________________________

Contaminated mindware includes beliefs that:

  • Are not grounded in evidence
  • Can be harmful for the person who holds it and for society
  • Are attractive and sticky
  • Spread easily throughout the population

While it may be surprising to some people, intelligence does not protect against contaminated mindware. In fact “[b]y making narratives complex, highly intelligent people can even become extra attracted to them” (Visser, 2011).

Strategies for avoiding contaminated mindware (Stanovich, 2009):

To avoid contaminated mindware:

  • Do not install mindware that could be physically harmful to you
  • Regarding mindware that may affect your goals, be sure the mindware does not preclude a wide range of future goals
  • Seek to install mindware that is truly evidence-based
  • Do not acquire mindware that resists evaluation, mindware that’s based on blind faith and requires that you do not question

In further discussion of mindware that resists evaluation, it is important to ask why we should not rely on blind faith.  This type of mindware renders itself unfalsifiable.  Blind faith is used as a safeguard against falsifying and evaluation.

Faith-based mindware tells us that wonder and mystery are virtues (a trick used to de-emphasize evaluation). “One really should ask of any faith-based mindware why it is necessary to disable the very tools in our cognitive arsenal (logic, rationality, science) that have served us so well in other spheres.” (Stanovich, 2009, p.169)

To reiterate,  intelligence does not protect us from contaminated mindware.   In an effort to avoid irrationality, learning to identify and avoid contaminated mind ware can go a long way.>

The above Excerpt from Psych Central, Essentially Reads:  Stay Away From Religion.

Though, Religion Relies On Believers Having Highly Contaminated Mindware For Its Own Survival.

So, Priests, Clergy, Churches, Sunday Schools, Religious Based Schools, spend a large proportion of their time, deliberately Contaminating the Mindware of Believers.

Evidently: All Theists Must Have Highly Contaminated Mindware.

Hm-mm, interesting. And it inspires.

Religion in a mind does what a trojan horse virus does in a computer, except that religion again and again repeats the harm.

[shrug] I don't mind, mate.  Subject comes up, I make an association with what I know and tap the appropriate quote or article or whatever.

Regardless, religious memes are clearly mindware viruses, and retroviruses at that, designed to perpetuate themselves at the expense of the host - US.  Sadly for them, inoculation with skepticism and knowledge provide excellent protection against them.

BTW Loren,

Pity we cannot get our Blogs to stick in the forefront of AN, so we wouldn't need to keep posting it in order to keep such knowledge in the minds of readers.

Also to annoy Theists who stumble across them while browsing.

Aye M8!  :-D~

Mindware is now a standard term Sentient.

I completed the online video series of James Randi Education Foundation entitled "How to Think About Dubious Claims" by the psychologist Ray Hyman who uses the term regularly in those lectures, though the use of it was mainly developed by Keith Stanovich.

Nice clip thanks Loren.

A very good teacher Purple Fox appears to be, it should be shown in all schools. Aye.

Maybe it should be broadcast on public television during religious periods.  LOL

I've put this up in multiple places on A|N.  Apparently, time to put it up again:

Christianity alters your identity to insure the survival of ITSELF.
-- from Prplfox's video series - http://ning.it/R2isGS

Not just christianity but religion as a general concept is about self-replication.  It is not about truth or any other kind of verifiable fact, but about what they want to be perceived as truth, as a means of the perpetuation of their bullshit, plain and simple.  They want people to accept without question, to swallow without tasting, to fear without understanding, so that the pattern of their power continues without interruption.

To which I have a very simple rebuttal: FUCK THAT.

I never thought of the idea of "mindware" but the idea has some appeal.  I agree with you that religion falls under the category of mind malware.  IF ever there was a malicious human thought-process virus, it's religion.
