I was incensed. There it was in the Washington Post, President Obama's campaign adviser casually acknowledging that he did not view the group collectively known as "nones" as a constituency.
This egregious statement is on a par with Mr. Romney's 47% remark. It simply sweeps us under the rug. He says we do not matter.
We do not matter even though an overwhelming majority of nones voted for the President's re-election; figures as high as 87% have been floated in recent days.
So I wrote the petition. Amazingly, no one else has addressed the issue on the Website.
I then E-mailed it to practically the entire Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way, posted it to Mensa, Intertel, the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry, the mail list I have for the Secular Coalition of America, my wife's freethinker's group on Yahoo. You name it, I posted it.
So please consider reading and signing my petition, and even if you choose not to sign, please consider what it means when a sitting president's campaign adviser can blithely state that he does not view 1/5 of the American public as a constituency, what it means for our civil rights, and what it means to others who are religious that hear that.
Remember that phrase attributed to GHW Bush: he did not view atheists as patriotic nor believe they should be citizens.

Comment by James Kz on December 11, 2012 at 10:47am Well, with two signatures, there are only 24,998 to go. I guess that much rabble.
Comment by Loren Miller on December 11, 2012 at 9:37am Ah, but how much rabble do you have TO rouse?!? [chuckle!]
Comment by James Kz on December 11, 2012 at 9:06am Thank you Loren. I have nothing better to do in a village of 128 fifty miles from a town out on the High Plains other than to rabble-rouse. :)
Comment by Loren Miller on December 11, 2012 at 7:44am Hmph - I should have known Google would find that meeting for me. It was with the Secular Coalition for America in February of 2010. That meeting was reported by several news organizations, including the USA Today article linked to above. Makes me wonder if that adviser was either asleep at the switch or has his own agenda.
Comment by Loren Miller on December 11, 2012 at 6:56am Read and signed, James. As I mentioned on your status, there was a meeting between members of the Obama administration and a secular group whose name I don't recall during his first term of office. I seem to recall some untoward reaction from some christian groups to that meeting as well. If that adviser is unaware of that or of Obama's largely secular upbringing, I think he needs a wake-up call if not a pink slip.
Atheists are part of the political landscape now. Anyone who wants to deny it is living in a fantasy land.
