I have decided to make 2009 a great year. I am going to be as positive as I can, no matter the situation with which I am faced. Christians I know seem to think atheists are depressed and negative, with the absence of the divine. I think I should do my part to show christians that atheists are more often than not, happy about life, freindly, loving, considerate etc. Not to mention, i know some christians who are unfriendly, negative about everything, and overall depressing. Hopefully people will notice my overal happy, comfortable, upbeat disposition, and when they learn I'm atheist, maybe they wont be as judgemental. I really believe life is only as good as you make it, and only as bad as you let it get. I will have bad days, sure. Loved ones will die, i will get hurt and/or sick, i will have money problems, i will have arguments, traffic tickets, etc, thats all a part of life. No life is all happy, so its all about making the best of your own situation. I think i have that advantage as an atheist, over my religious family and friends. I dont NEED to pray to and depend on a higher power, and hope he fixes my problems. I can do it myself! It's pretty empowering to know that I am not only responsible, but also totally capable of ensuring my own happiness and success.

Hi! I think that's a great idea (though I'm a bit late to this blog post.) I had a horrid 2008 with tons of things going wrong. I was terrified to reveal myself as an atheist to the new place I'm working because I figured they'd think that all these bad things were happening to me because of my lack of religion. (As if their god controls my plumbing or the thief who broke into my car, or the fact that my dog got cancer.) So this year I'm planning to do the same thing you're doing. Be positive and upbeat no matter what goes wrong. I still haven't let it slip that I'm an atheist at work, but maybe someday. Hope everything works out for you!

Sounds like a plan. Here are two more things you can do....
Praying is similar to meditation. If you think that it will help, learn to meditate. It is also very similar to hypnosis so be careful when meditating in a group controlled by someone else.
One of the best ways to be happier is to change your support system. That can be hard at first because you will have to find different friends who are more supportive.
