We have all been in church singing religious songs of some sort. Occasionally you may have thought about the words and realized how inane they are, or worse yet, how seriously wrong they are. For example, Amazing Grace. Sing the words a few bars and pretty soon you learn that you are a loser, you are lost, you are blind and your are totally guilty, and that is just the start. Why do churches sing such crazy things? It is directly related to the guilt cycle that facilitates religious infection and the power of music to bypass all the logical parts of the brain and go directly to emotional responses. Music's hypnotic power is used by every religion. Take a look at my videos on YouTube dealing with music. I think it is time we freethinkers start subtly pointing out some of the things religious people DO no what they may believe. Behavior reinforces beliefs. If we can help people see the behavior objectively, it may be a path to undermine belief in crazy ideas. Here are the links:

I actually like the instrumental version of "Amazing Grace", especially on bagpipes. As for the lyrics, I agree. Blech!

Even as a kid, I thought the song that goes "Jesus loves me, yes I know, 'cause the Bible tells me so" was stupid. How do you know the Bible is true?

I imagine you could speak to the "church band" phenomenon better than I. I have been amazed at the transition of conservative churches from the traditional organ and choir to the rock band music approach. It is a great example of The God Virus mutating to propagate itself. I would like to read your observations on this music trend.

I u\sed to play guitar in a 'praise band' at church. Jebus - what a bunch of crap. But the church understands the hypnotic power of music and exploits it to the fullest. Nothing like low lights, repeating drone-like melodies and a dynamic 'leader' to bring in the suckers.
