"Marjoe" - how can people still believe?
I watched the 1972 documentary "Marjoe" tonight (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068924/) and I confess to being some what bemused. I don't know what I find harder to swallow - that people can con and shuckster people the way these preachers do with such bald-faced fakery, or that the people in the congregation seem to be unable to see it. I don't understand it: how can people not see that these exhortations for money are pure greed and shystery? Does religion really make people that naive, or is it that the naive are the ones who believe?
The more I look at charismatic religion, the less I understand it. It seems to be all built on a fundamental premise that you must stop thinking completely and just accept anything told to you by someone who can stand up in front of a crowd and call "Jesus!"

Now, charismatic religion can seem more like a dance party to me and maybe even somewhat orgasmic. As to the more established religions, I think people just plain out don't think and are even afraid to think. Afraid that they have been succored in by a con job all of their lives and won't be going to heaven to see Aunt Mary after all. I also think it becomes habit like brushing your teeth so you just get up on Sunday morning to go to church like you have always done. I think it is also a way of belonging and a fear of being abandoned or ostracized by not belonging. I think there is also the business side. You can gather up customers, clients, volunteers, etc. by attending church and might lose same by not attending. And, "heaven" forbid, you want to run for a public office without being religious even when you are a Mormon and not a Christian when all of the Christians think you are.
