I think there is this huge misconception that all atheists are left-wing liberals. I don't think I fall totally into that category. First off I believe in the death penalty. Violent criminals, child molestors, rapists have the potential to be executed for their dispicable crimes. However I'm for abortion and stem-cell research. I believe that being too liberal i detrimental to society. Although The Netherlands is a very free country they are too liberal allowing for the disease of islam to stretch its tendrils into every aspect of society and getting special treatment. Geert Wilders is a great example.

There is a point where being tolerant is bad. There really is "too tolerant". When one group gets special treatment over others because they get their feelings hurt then that is not justice. Muslims are the most common offenders of this. One can't make jokes about islam, question their beliefs, accuse them of a violent religion without them losing their minds.

I'd really like your thoughts on this.

Ideology can, and often does, become just like religion. Concede that to apply your own personal judgment to each and every issue would likely still have you leaning one way or the other, but a rational person would not find him/herself neck-deep in a political party. We tend to simply go along with what the mob wants. A good example is the perception of our current president. Barack Obama is seen only in one of two ways: The Second Coming of Christ, or the Antichrist. Both views are patently absurd. It's that sort of narrow-mindedness that creates religion.

Kudos to you for having your own opinions on the issues, even if I don't necessarily agree with them.

Although I'm way to the left politically and to some degree my atheism influences my politics, I don't believe atheism and liberalism are synonymous. The husband of a friend of my wife is an irritating neocon republican and a very vocal atheist who believes the religionist are distroying the party.
